The mid-back, also known as the thoracic spine, consists of 12 vertebrae and refers to the area of the spine beginning from right below the neck up to the bottom of the rib cage.

Just like any other body part, this middle back area is subject to strain and stress. Pain in the middle back often causes tightness, stiffness or discomfort in the area between the shoulder blades. Although the mid-back is rarely the source of severe spinal problems due to its structure, mid-back pain and stiffness can be excruciating, and it is sometimes even compared to being stabbed with a knife.

Common causes of mid-back pain include joint dysfunction, rib dysfunctions, or muscle strains. Mid-back pain can result from a traumatic fall or accident, pregnancy, scoliosis, or even more serious conditions with the heart, gallbladder, lungs or pancreas. Mid-back stiffness, on the other hand, can result from poor postural habits caused by sitting at a desk or working in front of the computer all day.
